Get to know your elected officials and encourage them to support issues that are important to you! Your knowledge, opinions, and lived experience matter. You can impact the policymaking progress. Advocacy doesn’t have to be complicated. With the session over, now is the time to hold your representatives accountable and provide feedback on their votes, good and bad. Here’s a few ways to take action!
Use our new Legislator Scorecards to understand how your representative or senator voted on issues including abortion, LGBTQ2S+ rights, and health insurance.
Use the Legislator Phone Directory to find the phone number for your representative or senator. When you call, you may be connected to a staff member or voicemail initially. Share your perspective on their votes this session and ask the legislator to follow up with a response.
Emails can be simple or detailed. You can send a short message about a bill or vote with a brief note about why you care about the issue. You can also include personal stories or share resources to help inform your lawmaker on the importance of how they vote. It’s important to thank lawmakers for good votes as well as describing your concerns for votes that do not align with your values.
It’s easier than you think and a great way to reach a larger audience. Remember to keep it short, focused on a single topic, and conclude with a call to action for lawmakers or other community members.
