Spotlight Issue

In June 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, opening the door for states to ban abortion outright. With abortion now banned entirely in 12 states, and heavily restricted in other states, the impact of abortion bans are apparent. As predicted these bans have had chilling effects on essential, lifesaving care. The effects are devastating and in some cases deadly.

Criminalization is increasingly used to control and punish pregnant people for behaviors during pregnancy and birth outcomes including abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirth. State actors justify these actions as an attempt to protect “unborn life.” In doing so, they threaten to deprive all pregnant people of their rights and autonomy.
